I am speechless over this response to my email newsletter about solving a specific pottery problem. I want to put into words, the point at which we have arrived, that our children in a pottery class, and their guardians, need this kind of message.
Commercialism has reached pottery, packaging and selling "easy creativity," sucking much of the meaning out of the very traditions that sustained us for millennia. Wasn't traditional ceramics a character-building process? A real-world challenge that can't be "undone" with a click. Didn't it foster mentally stable, resilient, and connected human beings? Aren't the potters of India, who dig and prepare their own clay and glazes the real inspiration? Or is it painting ten colors of $50/bottle goop onto lumps of clay for social validation on a TikTok?

Think what you want about asking an AI about the meaning being sucked out of millennia-old traditions of pottery, but parts of its answer are still profound. |
