I have developed a number of engobes that fit the various clay bodies we make. Engobes are used in the tile industry, they enable coating a red clay with a thin layer of white. Glazes over that look as if they are on porcelain. I do the opposite, making a black engobe. These are made from a buff burning clay but the insides and part way down the outside have the black engobe applied at the leather hard stage. As you can see, the rutile glaze is far deeper and more vibrant over the black than over clay itself.
