This cone 6 pottery glaze has high melt fluidity. But that is not enough to enable healing of these pinholes. This is Plainsman Coffee clay. It contains particle sizes up to 42 mesh, as some of those decompose near cone 6. As they do so, they expel gases that can concentrate enough at a single point on the surface that not even this glaze can cover the holes left. We normally resolve this using a drop-and-hold firing. For people unable to program the cooling curve of the firing schedule, bodies like this are not likely suitable unless glazes are tested to have the needed melt fluidity and surface tension to heal the pinholes.

Pinholing
Pinholing is a common surface defect that occurs with ceramic glazes. The problem emerges from the kiln and can occur erratically in production. |
