This matte glaze is our G2571A recipe. The engobe on the right is L3954N. We do our reduction firing in a large gas kiln (to 2350F) using the C10RPL schedule. During latter stages of the firing we cut the air to the burners to supply only enough oxygen to burn the gas and no more. This removes all free oxygen from the chamber, causing any Fe2O3 in the glazes and clays to reduce to the metallic state. That moves colors in dolomite and talc mattes toward earthtones and red-browns and causes the iron impurity particles in the clay to melt through the glaze creating speckle.
