Amaco velvet underglazes cost 250% more than glazes of the same colour. Factoring the cost of a clear glaze it appears the underglazes could have up to four times the concentration of stain as the same colour glaze. We liquid-mixed three parts of our G3879 low fire brushing glaze (G1916Q would work also) with one part V-362 underglaze. Adjacent sides of this square planter were glazed with it and Spectrum 705 Black. Both are a dazzling jet black, if anything our mix is darker! This means that the underglazes can do double duty as liquid stain sources, used in small liquid-measure amounts to make only enough glaze needed for work at hand. Hobby ceramics and pottery provide circumstances under which this can be most practical.
