I have tried boron frits, compared to 3110, in a body -- just a preliminary test, but perhaps this is enough to dissuade further trials.
My research indicates that an amount of boron equal to or slightly exceeding the amounts of alkaline earths should be alright.
This is the reasoning behind the frits that I used in these test pieces (photos & formulae attached).
These pieces were glazed with a single-fire version of one of the glazes I am testing, to give a preliminary indication of fit.
The formula of the glaze (the same one on both body tests) I therefore see as immaterial in this study of boron in the body.
The glaze shows an interesting aspect of SS 2A & 3, in that it was absorbed into the body -- I take it that this was due to over-firing.
SS 1 & 2 -- using 3110 -- show good preliminary results, but SS 2A & 3 give me reason to doubt continuing with boron trials.
SS 3 is markedly bloated, which would suggest that a reduction of its frit -- 3134 -- would solve the problem.
However, I wonder if the bloating is a result of the early melt of boron, which thus 'destabilizes' the body, as cautioned in the research.
If this is so, then it is back to 3110 for me, without further consideration of frits that have more than just a pinch of boron (as in 3110).
Evidently, others have successfully done, but it may involve too deep a study to be worth while for me.
