Thermogravimetric analysis (TGA) reveals when mass loss occurs during heating
Key phrases linking here: tga test - Learn more
LOI testing quantifies the total mass lost at a chosen temperature (due to decomposition). However, thermogravimetric analysis (TGA) reveals when mass loss occurs during heating.
An ordinary pottery test kiln can also be used to fire weighed specimens to progressively higher temperatures, cooling and weighing them after each firing. By comparing successive weight losses, a technician can construct an approximate cumulative LOI profile. This is less precise than TGA, but potentially very revealing.

DTA Test
Differential thermal analysis (DTA) or differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) helps identify heat-absorbing or heat-releasing events, including some that produce no mass loss. |
