The crystalline (mechanical) water from talc evolves as a vapor. This is typically about 4% of the starting mass of the talc. Slower heating through this zone is appropriate for talc-containing single fire glazed bodies or those bisque fired below this range.
A source of MgO for ceramic glazes, a flux or thermal expansion additive in clay bodies, also used in the manufacture of cordierite.
