Peptapon is an organic gum and binder that can be used almost the same way as CMC. Various grades are available. Its gel isn't transparent like CMC gel - it is thicker using the same amount of water. It is also said to impart hardness without prolonging drying time as much as CMC gum.

Prepare as usual CMC preparation up to 45 gram in 1 liter of very hot water. Mix well using a mechanical mixer if possible, leave for a day and mix again.

Peptapon is especially valuable in high-frit glazes, preventing powdering. It improves the bond between dry glaze and the ware. While it is said to also be a "non-foaming suspension stabilizer", it is not clear exactly what that means. While Peptapon is said to be a suspender, people use a combination of it and bentonite to get better suspending action.

It is produced by the ceramic additives department of ZSCHIMMER & SCHWARZ. This material is used in industry so minimum order quantities put it out of reach of potters or even pottery suppliers.
