THIVIERS CLAY

Notes

Also known as Thiviers stoneware, a versatile iron rich earth of firing range, from 900-1180C, amenable to earthenware or stoneware compositions; and particularly good in red glaze recipes to be used in place of iron oxide. For many, Thiviers is a member of the class of pipe clays, though it is rarely seen labeled as such. Alone, not blended with other clays, it has low plasticity.

Clays that are not kaolins, ball clays or bentonites. For example, stoneware clays are mixtures of all of the above plus quartz, feldspar, mica and other minerals. There are also many clays that have high plasticity like bentonite but are much different mineralogically.
