Monmorillonite

Notes

A diverse group of very fine grained clay minerals. Two main varieties are sodium rich and calcium rich. They have very different plasticities (and therefore drying shrinkages) and reactions to water (i.e. permeability). Ca-montmorillonite absorbs much less water than Na-montmorillonite. Hybrid interlayered varieties are also common.

See Bentonite.

Clays that are not kaolins, ball clays or bentonites. For example, stoneware clays are mixtures of all of the above plus quartz, feldspar, mica and other minerals. There are also many clays that have high plasticity like bentonite but are much different mineralogically.
