Stain (green/blue-green)

Description: Vanadium Greens (ZrPrV, ZrVSn, ZrV)

Notes

Vanadium greens are based on mixtures of zircon-vanadium blue with either zircon-praseodymium, tin-vanadium or zircon-vanadium yellows. All the colours should be specially treated to remove soluble salts.

Color Range
-----------
Shades of green ranging from yellow-greens through turquoise greens to turquoise blue-greens. Those based on praseodymium are cleaner in shade.

Specific Gravity: 4.25 to 6.25

Stability/Kiln Atmosphere
-------------------------
Excellent in all types of glazes and bodies for firing at temperatures up to:

over 1300 C for Zr-V-Sn greens - oxidising atmosphere
and Zr-V greens - stable even under slightly reducing conditions
over 1250 C for Zr-Pr-V greens - oxidising to slightly reducing atmosphere

No tendency to strike or flash.

Compatibility
-------------
Suitable for blending with most other types of ceramic colours.

In practice, vanadium greens are normally blended only with either zircon-vanadium blue or the appropriate yellow. Those containing tin should not be mixed with chrome-containing stains.

Cost
----
Moderate to high depending on yellow content.

Mechanisms

Body ColorAdmirably suited to staining all types of bodies because of freedom from tendency to strike or flash. In reducing conditions, tin-based greens should not be used.
Glaze ColorSuitable for all types of glazes for firing at temperatures up to over 1300C (1250C for Zr-Pr-V). Zircon is recommended as an opacifier, although tin oxide may also be used. Underglaze Color: Suitable for all methods of underglaze decoration. Unlike victoria greens, vanadium greens are suitable for use under all types of glazes.
