Description: CoFeMn, CoFeMnNiCr, CoFe Blacks

Notes

Blacks can be made from many metallic oxide systems.

Color Range
-----------
Brown-black through neutral black to blue-black, the blueness increasing as the cobalt content increases.

Stability/Kiln Atmosphere
-------------------------
Stable to temperatures up to over 1300C. Will tolerate some reducing atmosphere. Stains containing chrome oxide have a tendency to flash or strike.

Compatibility
-------------
Suitable for blending with ceramic browns and with most other types of tin-free colors to produce intermediate shades.

Cost
----
Moderate.

Metallic based materials that impart fired color to glazes and bodies.

Mechanisms

Body ColorCoFeMn, CoFeMnNiCr stains are suitable for most types of bodies for firing at temperatures to 1300C+.
Glaze ColorCoFe, CoCrFe stains are suitable for most types of transparent glazes. The tendency of cobalt-based colors to soften the fired glaze can be overcome by the addition of china clay or silica to the batch before the stain is introduced. Underglaze Color: Suitable for most types of glazes to 1300C+. In this application the best results are obtained with colors having a low cobalt content, minimizing the risks of cobalt diffusing into and tinting the glaze blue.
