David Woodin
- I started with Honeywell Inc. as an
industrial service technician in 1956 and worked there
for 18 years. Because I knew something about ceramics,
they sent me to ceramic firms such as Universal Rundel,
Norris Thermador, Flintridge China, HC Muddox, Gladding
McBean, etc.
- An Instrument Inspector for Brown
& Root and Alaska Constructors on the Prudoe Bay,
North Slope Project for about 2 years.
- I worked for Pyrometer Associates
in Puerto Rico where I was responsible for servicing the
36 furnaces with there 3 zones of control instrumentation
at Union Carbide.
- I became president of Applied
Industrial Instrumentation in Reno Nevada. In 1985 I
bought out the service dept. and changed the name to
Instrument Service Inc, which is now run by my son since
I retired in 1994. Instrument Service Inc has accounts
with Eagle Picher Minerals Inc., Cyprus Foote Mineral,
Gladding McBean Inc. (terra cotta and sewer pipe) etc. We
also upgrade and improve instrumentation. I designed the
system and installed instrumentation for 12 dryers at
McBean.(program controllers) We also improved the
instrumentation of the 6 zone shuttle kiln and 4 zone
shuttle kiln at McBean. Our company also certify's
temperature controllers for the heat treating industry
which have to meet ISO 9000 standards. Some of the
instruments that we work on are Honeywell UDC 2000, 3000,
and 5000 controllers and recorders Chessell recorders and
multipoint recorders, Powers profiliers, Foxboro, Fisher
& Porter, Leeds & Northrup etc.
- I also have worked in the
wastewater and water treatment field.
- I have been a part time potter
since 1981 and after retiring started to do more pottery.
I joined an open Studio in Arlington VA where I soon
found that they had a need for someone to keep the 14
Brent wheels going plus 2 Skutt kilns and a gas kiln.
Since I had a programmable controller I used an SCR unit
and hooked it to one of the open studio kilns, once the
potters got use to it that is the kiln they prefer to
use. I am a volunteer at George Washington University and
spend most of my time trying to show students how to use
there industrial programmable controller which came with
a Unique kiln. I have been in contact with Orton and have
their information about the new controllers. The Orton
type controller is fine for potters, but the industrial
controllers are much better but not as user friendly.
