The best way to make website run in multiple languages is to build the authoring tools right into the site so it can be translated from an administration page.

Localizing for Different Languages

Software localization is part of the process of translating software into different languages. Digitalfire has written this remarkable new localization website to enable people from around the world to simultaneously work on translation of a software product into as many languages as desired (if you would like to utilize this remarkable new and affordable technology for your software product, please see below).

To demonstrate this tool and translate our own INSIGHT software we divide the task in the following manner:

  • Compilation
Digitalfire administrators organize the source English for all menu items, dialogs, windows, messages, etc within our INSIGHT software product into Interface Elements (these can include multiple versions of any individual item specific to the OSX, OS9, Windows, Linux platforms), upload appropriate screen shots to show context and enter tooltip notes for each. The localization area that translators use displays the software components as these appear during program operation along with the phrases that need to be translated.
  • Translation
Translators of dozens of languages do their work on the compiled pages that show the source English and the translation in the context of how it looks during program operation. Color coding and icons are employed to help translators quickly see out-of-date and untranslated items and it tracks their history of additions and edits. It also notifies about and displays suggestions from others who do not have full translation status. A function is available to create a text file of work so it can be run through a spell checker. Search capabilities enable translators to find any item regardless of what software interface element it belongs to.
Approved translators simply login at http://digitalfire.com and look for a translate link on the upper right corner.
  • Suggestion
Anyone who logs in at http://digitalfire.com can then enter as a suggestor. Like approved translators, they can specify a translation for any localization items along with reasoning on why so translated. Suggestors can also see the suggestions, translations and reasoning of others.
  • Download
People who use INSIGHT software visit the download area and choose a language and then save a language-platform file onto their computer (OSX, OS9, Windows, Linux). This file contains the key=value pairs the software needs to localize itself (INSIGHT software looks for such files in its home folder each time it starts). For example, the file spanish-win.lng is for the Windows operating system.

Would you like to utilize this technology for your software translation?

Do you have a software product that requires localization? Digitalfire Corporation is the most affordable solution to the translation aspect of localization, internationalization and globalization of your software. And we can customize our solution to better meet your translation needs. Remember, the age of the internet brings an unprecedented lack of correspondency between suitability and price. An inexpensive solution can be better than another costing thousands or even millions of dollars.

A short technical description of what this localization web application does: Using this site administrators maintain dated source name=value pairs coupled to a target platform along with guidenotes and screenshots while translators and suggestors create localized equivalents. The software product being localized downloads the name=value file and reads it to localize itself.

This is a different approach than the rest of the localization industry. It is revolutionary. If you have a vibrant user community for your software you may be able to simply direct customers to the localization site and they will do most of the translation work for you! At a minimum, you can enlist translators from around the world who need to know very little about software development.
