Materials in this class are added to bodies to reduce their thermal expansion by simply diluting a high expansion matrix by introducing particles having low expansion. It is thus implied that these materials are added as grog and are not fired high enough to change their mineralogy and therefore thermal expansion properties.

  • Materials - Kyanite

Kyanite is a super-duty refractory material with very high resistance to thermal shock.
  • Materials - Mullite

This material has a very low thermal expansion and high melting temperature.
  • Materials - Pyrotrol

Pyrotrol products impart higher strength in electrical porcelains and reduce dunting problems associated with traditional porcelain bodies if substituted for silica content.
  • Materials - Pyrotrol 3503

Pyrotrol products impart higher strength in electrical porcelains and reduce dunting problems associated with traditional porcelain bodies if substituted for silica content.
  • Materials - Pyrotrol 2253

Pyrotrol products impart higher strength in electrical porcelains and reduce dunting problems associated with traditional porcelain bodies if substituted for silica content.
  • Materials - Alkatrol

Add this to reduce thermal expansion and reduce firing shrinkage.

Expansion Increase

  • Materials - Talc

Talc is used up to 60% in low fire artware bodies to increase thermal expansion so they fit commercial glazes.

Low

  • Materials - Pyrophyllite

Pyrophyllite is often included in bodies to reduce thermal expansion.
  • Materials - Calcined Alumina

    A very low expansion material.
  • Materials - Zircon

    A very low expansion material.
  • Materials - Calcined Kaolin

A useful material for refractories and low expansion applications.
  • Materials - Andalusite

    Volume stable at high temperatures.
